You’ve been invited to a dinner party, but this one is different from the norm. You’ve been invited to a dinner party with a murder mystery where you’ll play a part and attempt to solve the case.

Although you’ve never attended one, I bet you know someone who has because these events are actually growing in popularity. They’re really fun, so don’t worry. The following advice will help you make the most of your evening and maximize your enjoyment.

1) Do it! Yes, please RSVP as soon as possible to let your host know that you’ll be there and ready to contribute. Giving notice or leaving at the last minute would not be a good idea because most mystery games depend on every participant showing up.

2) Study your character. Although these games don’t require memorizing scripts, it is always preferable to arrive with a solid understanding of your character. Knowing your character’s name and the fundamentals of who they are before entering the party also boosts your confidence.

3) Dress up! The right costume can make you and the other partygoers more relaxed and willing to participate. Think about your character and dress however you feel most comfortable because hosts frequently take pictures, and many mystery game shops, including mine, post these pictures on their websites for everyone to see. Have fun with it.

4) Be on time. It is inappropriate to arrive at a dinner party of this nature in style. You should try to arrive at least a few minutes early if not a few minutes before the time your host has specified.

5) The most crucial advice is most likely this one. Keep in mind that this is all purely recreational. Tonight is just a game. Nobody expects you to be an accomplished actor or even to put on a convincing accent (if one is required).

6) Yes & And…what does this mean? Good improvisation requires “yes” and “and” At one of these dinner parties, if you’re addressed, follow their lead! Go with it; follow it! If someone approaches you and asks you to dance, get up and join them (until the game tells you otherwise), and add a few moves if you’d like. If you can’t dance, your character probably can. You will receive written instructions on how to conduct yourself throughout the evening when you and everyone else arrive at the party…remember that your spouse, best friend, or family member will not behave that way tonight. There will be some individuals who are told to treat you in ways that are unexpected. It’s okay; just keep in mind that this is only a game. And also a pretty entertaining one.
